Oakdale Raises £400 towards Macmillan Cancer Charity

In support of the Macmillan cancer foundation Oakdale raised a fantastic £400 towards the charity. There was a fabulous effort by many of the staff in making cakes which were sold for charity as part of the coffee break. In addition to this there was a raffle with various prizes supported by the staff and the Plant. People were also asked to bring in old school photos for which the Plant Manager donated £5 for every old school photo bought in. Also as part of the donation the Plant Manager offered to wear a Wales shirt at a forthcoming Rugby international only if someone paid more than £25 at an auction. Eventually the winning bidder paid £80 to see an Englishman wear a Welsh Rugby top!

    Sponsorship of Local Rugby Teams

Unitech’s Plant in Wales likes to be involved with the community and sponsors local rugby teams. One of which has been highly successful in local and national competitions. Unitech started sponsoring Newbridge U18 last year in a season which proved an excellent one in which the team won the league and county cup. Not only did the team win various honours some of the individual players were selected to play for the national side at under 18 level.

This season the success has continued under some dedicated management and support backed by Unitech sponsorship. The side are currently top of the Dragons A league and into the last 8 of the Welsh National youth cup. Three of the players have been given national Dragons academy contracts (Youth Welsh Nationals) with 5 of the players training with the Welsh National under 18 squad. Not only have they been giving an excellent account of themselves on the field they have also been raising a significant amount of money off the field for a testicular cancer charity Oddballs.

    Coevorden supports Huntington Disease Association

Unitech sponsored their employee Arnold Kuiper, who ran his first marathon. He was quite successful and ended the marathon of Amsterdam in 3 hours and 40 minutes. With that he gathered money for the Huntington Disease Association. Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited brain disorder. HD causes cells in parts of the brain to die: specifically the caudate, the putamen and, as the disease progresses, the cerebral cortex. As the brain cells die, a person with Huntington’s becomes less able to control movements, recall events, make decisions and control emotions. Huntington disease is a genetic disorder. The HD gene is dominant, which means that each child of a parent with HD has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease and is said to be “at-risk”. Males and females have the same risk of inheriting the disease. Huntington’s occurs in all races. Symptoms usually appear between the ages of 30 and 50, but the disease can appear in children or seniors. For more information or donations, see links below.
